如在土瓜灣牛棚藝術村展出的「聲音藝術」,展示阿金回電給2013年9月至2015年8月期間,共超過一百多通曾致電阿金的不同宣傳電話號碼,並邀請接線者出席參觀本展覽。進行回電邀請時,將參照多數電話宣傳的呆板讀稿方式展開對話宣傳;
如在深水埗百尺公園展出的「攝影」,展示兩年內,每星期為自己兩個小女兒在同一地點、邀請她們擺同一系列姿勢拍照,記錄女兒兩年來的身體及形象變化的400幀4R照片,及一齣由那數百幀照片組成的單格動畫;
“Curate No More” Gum’s Art project (2013-2015) consists of 10 art projects conducted in the past two years. These projects are exhibited at 8 different venues around Hong Kong since August (e.g. veunes inside university, private club, shop, old apartment building, heritage architecture etc). (For more information about various exhibitions, please check the attached file: CurateNoMore_Time_Place_OK4.doc)
Following the curatorial practice of many local government institutes, Gum’s art projects are categorized into different types, according to the art medium being applied in each project. Two years were spent on these ten projects for weekly experiments that were repetitive, simplistic and structurally boring. To accumulate bit by bit is the essential key for all the ten projects. Gum started this series of projects on September 1st, 2013. Since then, he repeated the pre-designed tasks every week for 100 weeks, in order to have slow but sustainable development for his artworks to be exhibited in the end of the two years as a summary and review. Besides exploring how to make art through accumulation for a long period of time, the contents of the projects are all closely related to the artist’s daily life.
For example, the “sound art” piece at Cattle Depot Artist Village (To Kwa Wan) is about how Gum CHENG called back more than 100 telephone promoters who called Gum within the period of September, 2013 and August, 2015. Gum called back in a boring manner similar to the style of most telephone promoters, to invite the phone operators to his exhibitions.
The exhibit at ‘100 ft Park’ displays a photo series of Gum’s two daughters at the same spot, with the same postures, every week in the past two years. The 400 4R photos document the changes of the daughter, in terms of their physical growth and also their different dressing styles throughout the years.
The ‘mail art’ series at Kubrick, Yau Ma Tei, consists of 75 replied letters from Chief Executive Office, in response to Gum’s 100 weekly letters posted to the Chief Executive in the past two years. The exhibit also has a video documenting how Gum CHENG opened the 75 replied letters with similar content, all at once, in front of the Chief Executive office in September, 2015.
“Curate No More” Gum’s Art project (2013-2015) is a complicated project involving many different layers and many different exhibition locations. To a certain extent, it is quite confusing. Perhaps, even exhibitions organized by government art institutes would not be able to obtain such confusing effect. Besides being an individual artistic project, “Curate No More” also is a critique of the curatorial direction of local institutes and an explorer for more possibilities for exhibitions.
“Curate No More” summarizes 10 small art projects at 8 different exhibition sites. There are totally two days when all the exhibitions take place all at once. Now, as some of the exhibits have ended, what remain on show til the end of October, 2015, include ‘sound art’ at Cattle Depot Artist Village, To Kwa Wan, ‘proposal writing’ and ‘art criticism’ at C&G Artpartment, Prince Edward, ‘photography’ at 100 ft Park, Sham Shui Po, ‘mail art’ at Kubrick, Yau Ma Tei, ‘sculpture’ at sense99, Central. All the shows are free of charge and welcome all to visit!
