About the Exhibition:
Hong Kong once harboured a utopia. Iron barricades, cable ties, and various makeshift tools intertwined to form its boundaries. Outside, the city's usual essence prevailed, but within those lines, something special unfolded—a brief, yearned-for world that might not have come to life without these organically formed borders. Those seemingly rigid barriers shielded the seeds of hope, allowing them to sprout quietly. At that moment, we were awakened, tasting the essence of an ideal world for the first time.
But once it was lost, I began to wonder—why are we, tethered to the ordinary, unworthy of such a beautiful world? Was it simply a matter of timing, or did it never truly exist? A decade has passed, and the iron barricades and cable ties no longer protect the seeds of hope. But one thing is certain—we've come to understand our power. From building physical boundaries, we have evolved into something fluid, dispersed, yet resilient.
"Iron Barricades - Cable Ties - and Hope" was photographed ten years ago in autumn. Siu says, "The images have long been hidden deep in a filing cabinet. I was afraid to reveal them in the past because I didn't know how to face the world's sweeping changes. But now, a new opportunity has led me to rediscover these long-forgotten photographs, filled with silent scenes that invite me to closely reflect on those moments. I've unearthed layers of thoughts and memories—perhaps this is the meaning I've discovered ten years later."
“Iron Barricades - Cable Ties – Hope” is C & G Artpartment’s third major exhibition in the UK after their relocation. This exhibition is organised in conjunction with the 'Harcourt Road' project and the 10th anniversary of the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. UK-based Hong Kong photographer and artist Wai Hang Siu will showcase a series of his photography works that have been kept unreleased for ten years. On the final day, the artist will hold a sharing session. Admission is free, and we warmly welcome everyone to visit.
