About Journey to the East:
This exhibition ‘Journey to the East’ brings together a new body of paintings created by Chris Cook over the last few years in Hong Kong. Having left her native Hong Kong for the UK in the 1990s to pursue her studies, Chris Cook relocated back to Hong Kong several years ago. The title of the exhibition ‘Journey to the East’ reflects this vibrant, colourful, crowded, and noisy city, as well as the environments and colours she has encountered around Southeast Asia which continue to provide her with inspiration. She continues to work with a certain instability of colour, repeated yet unpredictable geometric shapes and a loosely structured grid format to create a combination of order, contradiction and flux in the work.

This exhibition ‘Journey to the East’ brings together a new body of artwork created by Chris Cook over the last few years in Hong Kong. The work reflects how this vibrant, colourful, crowded, and noisy city continues to provide her with some of her inspiration combined with her own technically accomplished and vibrant painting style. She continues to work with a certain instability of colour, repeated yet unpredictable geometric shapes and a loosely structured grid format to create a combination of order, contradiction and flux in the work.
Born in Hong Kong, Chris moved to the UK in the 1990s and studied Fine Art at De Montfort University, Leicester, followed by post graduate studies in Fine Art at the Royal Academy of Art in London. She also acquired an MSc in Translation at Imperial College, London. In 2011 Chris re-located back to Hong Kong and has been working on a new body of work to reflect her Asian roots and culture.
The name of the exhibition ‘Journey to the East’ reflects her artistic journey from the west to the east, and how her recent work has been inspired by her vibrant and dynamic environment as well as colours she has encountered throughout Southeast Asia in recent years.
This exhibition is accompanied by her book ‘Chris Cook Artworks 1997 – 2014’ which features a contribution from the Los Angeles based author, critic and artist Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, as well as photographs by the internationally renowned British photographer Michael Freeman.
The exhibition will be held at C&G Artpartment, 3/F, 222 Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Prince Edward, Kowloon, Hong Kong. There will be a reception with drinks and snacks on Friday the 7th July from 6pm onwards and all are welcome.
