About the Exhibition:
Artists' creations, documented through international exhibitions, global media, and archival records, have become vital testimonies for the contemporary history of many totalitarian states. For the people of Burma, these works offer alternative narratives that challenge the singular historical account dictated by the oppressive regime, while sustaining the ongoing call for humanitarian support from the international community.
It is our honour at C & G Artpartment to host three Burmese artists in exile, Sai ▇▇▇▇, K and Ma, in the current Art in Protest Residency program supported by Human Rights Foundation. During their time here, the three artists engage with fellow artists, activists and curators exchanging ideas and exploring strategies for cultural resistance and human rights advocacy in today’s challenging political climate. Their residency will culminate in two exhibitions in Sheffield and London, where they will share their work with audiences in the UK.
In Sheffield, Sai ▇▇▇▇ will present part of his evocative photographic series "Trails of Absence" (2021) , which uses atmospheric portraiture to trace absence and memory. The series revisits the former official residence of his father, a democratically elected parliamentarian before the military coup, uncovering layers of personal and collective trauma.
In London, audiences will encounter Sai ▇▇▇▇’s haunting portrait series "Please Enjoy Our Tragedies," alongside "Myanmar Junta’s Playbook for Kidnapping, Abduction, Torture, Arbitrary Detention, and Extrajudicial Killings" ("Playbook"). Styled as a “manual” for authoritarian regimes, the "Playbook" reveals the inner workings of systematic oppression in Burma, based on interviews with survivors. The portraits in this series are all connected by long white ribbons, symbolising enduring human solidarity in the face of brutality.
Ma, a filmmaker and visual poet, will present Silent Heroes, a moving short film that highlights the stories of those who continue to resist tyranny. She will also exhibit a visual poem written during her imprisonment, using only a smuggled pencil. Though confined, M refused to let her voice be silenced—a defiant act of creative resilience.
The scars of war in Myanmar reach far beyond the adult population, deeply affecting children. In this exhibition, K presents drawings created by children who have lived through the military coup and a recent earthquake. These poignant works speak directly to the world, exposing both the cruelty of a totalitarian regime and the enduring impact of conflict on innocent lives.
We warmly invite you to visit these exhibitions in Sheffield and London. Through the eyes and voices of these courageous artists, you will witness stories that are often hidden—stories that demand to be seen, heard, and remembered. Under the same exhibition title, these three Burmese artists will also take part in another group show curated by C & G Artparmtnet, alongside The Gao Brothers from China, Sanmu Chen from Hong Kong and Tibetan artist Tenzing Rigdol during the Oslo Freedom Forum, beginning on 17 May Oslo Atelie Studio. We believe that the kind-hearted will ultimately receive their blessings, but the Guilty must Kneel one day!

在倫敦,觀眾將看到 Sai ▇▇▇▇ 的最新作品 "Please Enjoy Our Tragedies"(《請享受我們的悲劇》),以及 "Myanmar Junta’s Playbook for Kidnapping, Abduction, Torture, Arbitrary Detention, and Extrajudicial Killings" 《緬甸軍政府綁架、強迫失蹤、酷刑、非法拘禁與法外處決手冊》)(簡稱《手冊》)。
